Ryobi 40V HP 26″ Brushless Hedge Trimmer Review

The Ryobi 40V 26″ cordless hedge trimmer has enough power, cutting power and blade length to get the job done quickly and efficiently. With more capacity and great top speed, it’s more of a professional trimmer without the Stihl price tag.
Last year, Ryobi pioneered high performance wireless OPE. The Ryobi 40V HP brushless 26″ cordless hedge trimmer has joined the Whisper collection. This trimmer has many familiar features, but it’s performance that really grabs the attention here.
One of the most notable features of this cordless hedge trimmer is its incredible 1 1/2″ cutting capability. Ryobi 40V brushless motor turns on. The only other cordless hedge trimmer we could find with the same cutting power was the Stihl HSA 94 R on the Pro side of the market. Most people tend to peak around 1″ while some 1 1/4″ options are available.
This is a big deal for several reasons. First, it can handle larger branches when pruning. Secondly, this larger tooth pitch allows more material to pass smoothly, so the rod is less likely to get stuck while passing.
The 26″ double action knife is available in two speeds. If you’re not worried about saving battery life, then the 3200 SPM top speed is your best bet. If you want the battery to last longer, reduce the speed to 2800 rpm.
This hedge trimmer is equipped with a double blade system that greatly reduces the vibration of the felt. On some trimmers, one set of blades remains stationary while the other moves. Ryobi moves the two blades back and forth like scissors. Thus, the two edges of the two blades continuously cut the material between the teeth.
Moving the blade in the opposite direction definitely dampens the vibration. Because one moves forward and the other moves backward, the movement of the mesh is even, resulting in a smoother cut. Plus, you don’t have to worry about gas engine vibration, you get a very ergonomic tool.
Part of the Ryobi Whisper range, this 40V brush cutter reduces noise levels in outdoor power equipment. Although the motor is noticeably quieter than other models on the market, the actual blade noise of this tool is difficult to reduce. Our sound pressure level meter measured from our operator’s ears showed that this cordless hedge trimmer has a low noise level of 82 dB and a high level of 87 dB. However, it is still much quieter than any natural gas alternative.
Ryobi has inherited the Hedge Sweep we saw on previous models. It slides on a raised track at the top of the pole and helps guide and clear grass clippings at the top of hedges and shrubs. The best part is that you don’t have to remove the sheath when you want to replace it.
Ryobi’s 26″ hedge trimmer measures 43″ edge to edge, weighs 11.3 pounds and is powered by a 2.0 Ah battery. While it’s not the lightest trimmer on the market, it does balance well with this battery.
We see more and more brands adding a rotary handle feature to their brush cutters, which makes sense to us. This is a simple feature that allows you to work comfortably at different angles and shapes your hedges and landscaping very easily.
To adjust the angle, pull the release button back, then turn the knob. At full 180° rotation, the pawl rotates 45° and 90° in both directions.
Good handle spacing and weight distribution are key to the safe and efficient use of longer tools. Obviously Ryobi designed a 2.0Ah battery, but we also found the 4.0Ah battery to be good too.
Both horizontal and vertical cuts are very easy, and the wide front handle gives you plenty of grip options. Combine the wide front grip with the versatility of a multi-position grip and you have a true winning team.
The Ryobi 40V 26″ hedge trimmer sells for $329 and comes with a 2.0Ah battery, charger and detachable hedge brush. In addition to accessories, Ryobi includes a 5-year tool warranty and a 3-year battery warranty.
The Ryobi 40V 26″ cordless hedge trimmer has enough power, cutting power and blade length to get the job done quickly and efficiently. With more capacity and great top speed, it’s more of a professional trimmer without the Stihl price tag.
