Unilever recalls popular hair care products over fears carcinogenic chemical could be ‘boosted’

Unilever recently announced a voluntary recall of 19 popular dry cleaning aerosol products sold in the US due to concerns about benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer.
According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, exposure to benzene, which is classified as a human carcinogen, can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact and can cause cancer, including leukemia and blood cancer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people are exposed to benzene on a daily basis through things like tobacco smoke and detergents, but depending on the dose and length of exposure, exposure can be considered hazardous.
Unilever said it was recalling the products “out of precaution” and that the company has not received any reports of side effects associated with the recall to date.
The recalled products were manufactured prior to October 2021 and retailers have been notified to remove the affected products from the shelves.
A complete list of affected products and consumer codes can be found here. The company said in a press release that the recall would not affect Unilever or other products under its brands.
The recall was made with the knowledge of the US Food and Drug Administration. Unilever is urging consumers to immediately stop using aerosol dry cleaning products and visit the company’s website for reimbursement of eligible products.
